Matthew looked at the dial as he entered the new timeline. For all intents and purposes, this one was his own. He was still trying to work out the loop he had encountered in the sixties. Inevitably, at the end of the day, the dial would send him back and he would have to live it once again.

“Consider this a break, Elijah.” He said, turning his back on the box as lay down in the bed. “Lord knows I deserve one. Besides, I have a date.”

The day before, though it seemed much longer to him, he had met Christy at her place of work and they had planned a breakfast. That breakfast was in a few hours and he was excited about keeping the date. Though his heart had recently fallen to Marisela, he also felt that his future, his real future, lay with his former high school crush.

“It was so good to see you yesterday, Matthew.” Christy said, smiling as she sat down in the booth across from him. “Have you already ordered?”

“Nope, waiting for you.” He grinned.

Her face lit up, just as it had the previous afternoon. His recent experiences had taught him one thing; there are things that the passage of time never dulls. There had been a bond between them in high school, and that bond was still there, even almost ten years later. Missed opportunities and all.

“So tell me everything you’ve been up to for the last decade.” Christy laughed. “Sorry I had to cut it short yesterday.”

“Well, I’m certainly not going to fault you for not dropping your whole world to chat with a guy you haven’t heard from for that long.” Matthew said.

“You just caught me off guard.” She said. “I spent all night kicking myself for not doing just that.”

“Time is complicated.” Matthew said, thinking about just how much of an understatement he felt that was. “Really, nothing very exciting when it comes right down to it, but we can fill in more of the details later. This is my time and I don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon.”

“Can I make a confession?” Christy asked.

“I’ll listen, but not so sure I’ll be able to give absolution.”

“Funny as ever.” She said, then her face softened again. “No, I just wanted to tell you that I’ve always hoped you’d be back some day. I should have told you that last night.”

Matthew looked at the seriousness of her face and reflected it back to her. “There’s plenty of time for that. I sort of dropped a bombshell on you.”

“That you did.” Christy said, her teeth showing a little as her smile started to return. “Jeez, I sound like a schoolgirl.”

“There’s plenty of time for that too.” Matthew joked.

___

As the pair drove back up to the Victorian, Matthew couldn’t stop thinking about one thing. Ten years ago, at least by his reckoning, they had made this same trip. Christy didn’t give any indication that she remembered it. Was it some glitch
